Hmmm. Well, in the 80's, the retro influence was the 50's. In the 50's, baroque music was really hip and happenin'. So you notice the baroque influence on 80's metal. I'm assuming that the Gothic movement (which was also based on a retro influence) might have shown up when metalheads started looking back to the past (Baroque) and combined that with the goofy 80's romantic/Little House on the Prairie/Victorian vibe that was also in vogue.

The Gothic period of romanticism was preoccupied with death and spookiness and black clothes--it was the Victorian era and Queen Victoria was in mourning for like her entire reign. Gothic architecture doesn't really mesh with Gothic writing or the black clothes. Technically, the "Goth" kids are tapping into the Victorian Gothic aesthetic, with the interest in Egyptian mythology, death, spiritualism, the occult, ghosts, mummies...it's not much of a leap for people who dig death to glorify death by dressing in black and smearing black and blue on their faces to look like they're after-alive.

You're missing a couple of steps in your progression. But it's an interesting cultural phenomenon, the penchant for retro stuff. I used to live in a Victorian house, myself, and I used to love to sit on the upstairs balcony porch and imagine that I had consumption or the vapors or something, so I get the Gothic idea (and I even made stained glass pieces for my house.)

If you really look back in history, and you look at what gothic really is, it's not only the style of architecture, but also the style of people. Take England for example, where most originated. It's the dresses and the dark colored hair. It's basically British stlye like from the days or Harlets.

Just look at goth the way you want to look at it. Of one of many some goths like the dark eyeliner and others don't. So just let them do what they want! I do!

Too many vampire movies that were either not rated "R" or the "R" rating was not enforced.
