That depends on what you want.
The most popular and famous Pink Floyd album is Dark Side of the Moon (1973). It is also one of the best-selling albums of all time. The track "Another Brick in the Wall" is not on Dark Side of the Moon; it is on The Wall (1979),the second biggest Pink Floyd album. Dark Side of the Moon has famous songs such as "Money", "Time" and "Us & Them". It is probably the best album to start listening to Pink Floyd. It serves as a good introduction and you will probably want more albums after you buy this one. The problem is this album doesn't give you a global vision of Pink Floyd's career. And it lacks some great Pink Floyd hits such as "Wish You Were Here". Wish You Were Here (1975) and The Wall (1979) are the other logical choices if you want to start listening to Pink Floyd. Although great, Animals (1977) and The Final Cut (1983) are less popular. And A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994) are terrific, but they don't represent Pink Floyd's golden age anymore. Dark Side of the Moon stands as the best introduction to the band.
If you want a compilation with Pink Floyd's greatest hits, you should try Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd (2001). It is a double album that covers Pink Floyd's entire career. Pink Floyd's career is composed of three distinct eras: the 60s (when they produced psychodelic music, heavily influenced by LSD, under influence of Syd Barrett); the 70s (when they rose to superstardom and became one of the biggest bands in the world) and the 80s and 90s (after Pink Floyd reunited). You can listen to all that eras in this album. If you want just one Pink Floyd album, this is the one to have.
Pink Floyd is also well known for its great performances. Their last tour (The Division Bell Tour, in 1994) became the world's top grossing tour (before it was outgrossed by the Rolling Stones). This tour is documented on PULSE (1995), a double live album. The quality of the sound is very good and some songs sound even better and clearer than the original recording. PULSE also covers Pink Floyd's entire career and has most of its biggest hits. The second disc also contain an integral live performance of the album Dark Side of the Moon. I personally began listening to Pink Floyd by this album and I don't regret it! If you have a DVD player, it is worth to buy PULSE on DVD because the concert is visually amazing with its dancing lights and lasers. The Delicate Sound of Thunder (1988) is also a great Pink Floyd live album, but I personally prefer PULSE.
If you are new to the band, I don't recommend buying Pink Floyd's early albums, such as Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Relics or Atom Heart Mother (and other albums pre-Dark Side of the Moon). I think these albums are great, but they have experimental and psychodelic songs and you may get disappointed because they don't sound like the "mainstream" Pink Floyd of "Money" and "Another Brick in the Wall". You'll learn how to appreciate Pink Floyd lesser known albums after you have listened to the most popular ones. Buy these first.

I am a Pink Floyd lover and complety fan. I have heard all the songs, own all the albums, own the movie "The wall" and had the pleasure to be on the concert "The Pulse" in London.
If I would have to recommend one album, buy Echoes, you would hear the finest of Pink Floyd, you will not be dissapointed

For a first Pink Floyd album, i would recommend either "Meddle" (1971), "Dark Side Of The Moon" (1973), or "Wish You Were Here" (1975). If you don't like any of those.....then you should probably try listening to a different band.

No, then you want Dark Side of the Moon. It's "The Wall" that has the "Brick in the Wall" song. Makes sense, doesn't it? Or, try "Pulse" - it came out a few years ago & has a bunch of their best stuff on it. Also - Dark Side of the Moon is cool cuz you can play it while watching Wizard of Oz - it matches up well, eerily enough. Great band tho - I applaud your interest.

I go along with PhantomLover. Dark Side is an all-time classic, and you should definitely own it. It was on Billboard's Top 100 albums for over TEN YEARS!
