It is not that rare it is just valuable, about 9% of the population has type O- blood. The most rare kind of blood is AB-. Type O- is the only kind of blood that everyone can recieve, that makes it very valuable.

O type blood is less common to the A and B blood types because the gene that controls the O type blood is recessive to blood types A and B. There are many types of combinations of genes that determine blood type: AA, BB, AB, AO, BO, OO. When the A and B genes are matched togethor they form the AB bloodtype because they are codominate. However, when the gene for O type blood is paired with A or B, it gets masked by these two genes and does not show because it is recessive to them. Therefore, out of the 6 possible gene combinations for bloodtype, only one of them results in a blood type of O. Hope this helps

The genes for A or B type blood are dominant over the ones for O type. People who are type A can either be AO (an A from one parent and an O from another) or AA (an A from each parent). However, in order to be O you must have OO (an O from each parent) since an A or B is dominant.

It's not rare, it's universal. Almost anybody, regardless of blood type, can use O- blood in a transfusion, which is why people with O- get contacted so often by blood centers.

O - blood really isn't that rare, but it's the best blood to have, if you want to give, because it can be given to anyone of any blood type.

O negative blood really isn't that rare. Is more rare than O positive, but nowhere close to as rare as AB negative...

Its the negative that makes it so rare. That is the rH factor. Negative means that you don't have rH D antigen in your blood. If you're a woman, it can do harm to your subsequent children if you don't get rhogam shots during your pregnancy. Even if you have an abortion or miscarry, you need shots.

like people said, type O is not rare..however it is the universal donor, which means you can donate your blood to type A, B, AB, people...but usually it is better to receive blood your own type, unless of emergency.
