This is not an Investing question, but I'm going to answer it anyway because you happened across the right guy.
Do not click on the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom. It only confirms your email address, and confirmed addresses are worth money on the net.
The best way to do away with spam is to open a second email account, and never, ever, ever sign up online for anything on the internet with that account.
Now that the internet folks have your email address, your spam problem will only get worse as they sell your information to others, pass it around, trade it for other information, and generally expand the proliferation of your email address.
Almost all ISP's offer multiple email addresses, or you can get a freebie from Yahoo or MSN or whatever.
Not only the "best" way, but the only way to do away with spam is to create a clean email account, and don't give it away to people you don't know. Nobody can use your email address that you don't give it to. Use your spammed account to chat or join RSS feeds or groups.
Good luck fighting the old account. It's a losing battle.
Incidentally, I have an email account I use strictly for my business that has never received one email I didn't want; not one piece of spam in over a year. What a pleasure it is to use, when you know waiting email is something you need or want. No more time wasted for unnecessary "maintenance" and fiddling with filters and blockers and the latest new spam program. Screw that; make the switch, then be careful.

I haven't found any way that will eliminate them completely.
Spam filters are the only way I know of to cut down on them.
It depends on your Provider how good it works. Some are better at it than others. The one that works best for me is Yahoo. Because I can set it to delete all mail from addresses that are not listed in my address book, Just have to make sure I have all the addresses in there from people I want to receive from.
But NEVER click on the "unsubscribe link" that is at the bottom of a spam Email. That just tells the spammer that it is a good Email address. Which means you will get even more not less.
And NEVER open it. Sometimes that's all to takes to let them know it is a good address.

Also, if you bounce the email back, the sender will recieve a message saying that your email address is invalid and you will ot recived any more emails from that sender. Unllike the FEDERAL DO NOT CALL LIST, there isn't a DO NOT SPAM LIST as of yet. So, get yourself a really good spam blocker which comes with most ISP accounts and utilize this tool.

You can only block it. There is a variety of ways e-mails get set, and some of them are from trojans on other computers. Some are sent to get legit e-mails (so they can sell the list and all you have to do is open them). Some are pretending to be people to get your information they need to steal your identity.

Contact the mail preference service. I think you will find them if you go onto the Royal Mail's website (assuming you live in the UK).
