Unfortunately, the Mayans did not use a calendar that is similar to ours. Although the later Mayans recognized that the year was in fact 365 days (and a little longer), the modern calendar started in or around the 4th century BCE.
here's the difficulty: The Mayans used three calendars concurrently. You can read about the names and how they worked, but be prepared to spend a significant amount of time. Many experts do not agree on how they worked.
In one of them, the civil or Haab calendar, they divided a 365-day year into eighteen 20-day months followed by a five-day period that was part of no month, but called Wayeb or Uayeb. These days were unlucky.
The months were as follows:
1. Pop 2. Uo 3. Zip 4. Zotz 5. Tzec 6. Xul 7. Yaxkin 8. Mol
9. Chen 10. Yax 11. Zac 12. Ceh 13. Mac 14. Kankin
15. Muan 16. Pax 17. Kayab 18. Cumku
See the site below for some suggestions on what the months mean and how the Mayans calculated the date. There is a clever little calendar converter there too.
Good luck in picking it up!
