I had an abnormal test suggesting down syndrome and was wondering if any other women experienced this same thing but only to find out that everything was in fact OKAY? I have heard that there are quite a few false-positives with this screening and am hoping and praying that everything is ok. I am having an amniocentesis done this upcoming week....wish me luck!

Yes, this happened to me within the past month. I took the initial triple-screen test at the perinatologist's office, and the results came back 1-in-2600 chance for a genetic abnormality. But the result from the AFP test taken at my doctor's office came back with a 1-in-14 chance.

I was terrified! I went back to the perinatologist's office, and she did a targeted ultrasound and told me that given the results from the first triple-screen test, and the ultrasound that she just did, she determined that I had a normal baby, BUT that only an amnio would tell for sure. So I did the amnio and got the results back 3 days later: everything was NORMAL.

From all the reading I've done on the internet, it seems that false-positives from AFP (alphafetoprotein) tests are very common -- about 5% -- but of those 5%, 90% of those turn out to be normal, healthy babies. Very good odds, in my book.

Please do a google search for "false positive, AFP test" and you will find so much out there that will ease your mind about your test results.

Good luck!

Hello and congratulations on your baby!

I had a false positive with my second child. I decided NOT to have the amnio, knowing that the odds were on my side that this was a false positive. I am happy to report that my daughter was born healthy and with no problems.

With my third child I decided to forego all genetic testing. It did nothing but cause me worry. I wouldn't risk the chance of a miscarriage with an amnio (which at my age is a real risk) and wouldn't abort a baby anyway, so having the genetic markers didn't make sense.

Good luck... I know it's hard to wait but chances are good that things will be fine. Even if the amnio reaffirms something isn't right, I'm sure you will fall hopelessly in love with that baby no matter what.

I know three women who have had this result. One was scared by it and had an abortion. The other two had perfectly normal babies. Don't be too concerned...it's such a scary time in your life because you're worrying two!
