It's a bit of a classic, but everyone should read George Orwell's 1984. The story is relentlessly gripping throughout and in some respects the world which it describes is scarily similar to the one we live in today. Bear in mind though that this book was written before 1950 which makes it quite prophetic.

If you like fantasy, I HIGHLY recommend the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. The first book is called The Eye of the World. Prepare for some really long books, but they are just awesome.
I've also heard a lot of praise for The Death Gate Cycle series by Margaret Weis, first book titled Dragonwing. Haven't read those myself, though, but the general consensus seems to be that they're the best out there.
Also heard only good things about Guy Gabriel Kay, but haven't read his books either.

If you are 16 then there is only one book you should read now and that is The Catcher In The Rye. A book that has stayed with me since I read it aged 17. Its not fantasy its fantastic!

Try 'Kestral For A Knave' by Barry Hines. I first came across the book when I was 13, it was a set book at my school. I have read it hundreds of times since then, I am now in my 30's.

Try King Fortis the Brave. One of the best fantasy novels I've read in a long long time.

Terry Pratchett has written a whole lot of books that have a sort of fantasy setting, but are written in total satire. They're really very funny. My favorite Pratchett novel is "Going Postal."
