You can copyright the formula for a color, such as John Deere Green or Home Depot Orange or School Bus Yellow. Once you have a copyright on the formula, no one can sell that color without your permission or without paying you.

Absolutely. Not the primary colors like (red, blue etc...) but the formulas for thousands of shades are patented. In fact, the Boston Red Sox own the patent for the green shade on the walls (including the "Green Monster". People can try approximate it, but no one can go into a paint store and buy that color.

You could patent a color , but first a patent search is done to see if it doesn't exist already , so although it's possible I think the odds are bad and it cost money to do this and you can't obtain a patent without doing a patent search first.

Definitely not! Colour is every where, you can't have rights over that. I thinks it's stupid that Paris Hilton wanted to patent, "That's Hot!" Everyone can say anything without getting sued... Otherwise, we don't live in free countries.

Whoever invented the hex system that can describe more colours on your pc than the human eye can distinguish beat you to it. In the public domain where it belongs.

I don't know if the right word is patent or copyight but V.W. has done it. The yellow that they use for their Beetles - you can only get that color (shade of yellow for cars) from them . . .
