I wonder if it's time for another major shift in American politics. Democrats have lost in the long run over the past 20 years, and it's because the democratic party has no real platform. It's more like a coalition of different extremists: The Civil Rights group, the feminists, the animals rights activists, and the environmental activists. The only real party line is opposing republicans. People don't so much vote for democrats as they do vote against republicans. I think (despite Bush signing so many social spending bills), that republican fiscal policy is winning out. What I see happening is redefining the parties as republicans vs. libertarians because the current conservatives are creating a lot of social/moral issues that some don't agree with. With the economy booming after Bush's tax cuts, democrats aren't even arguing fiscal policy anymore, just social/moral issues. Maybe it won't happen, but the democrats are currently without principles.

Someone brought up Clinton. Here's what I mean: Republicans have controlled Congress since Clintons years which limited his ability to lead. Plus, anyone will tell you that Clinton was the most CENTRIST president of the last 20 years.

Correct on every count, Jake. The real problem with democrats is they are being driven by the far left Move On and Daily Kos crowd. Democrats will continue to lose elections and degrade as a national party.

They can and should pull out of this death spiral. If they had more Joe Liebermans and more Zell Millers, they’d be competitive. We need the democrats to be competitive, because right now the republicans are a bunch of *** hats.

Some real competition would do the republicans some good, shake them up, and remind them of their core principals.

WHAT? The truth of the matter is that Democrats certainly do have principals - many of which coincide more than you would think with those of the Republican party. I am sick of hearing people infer that if your a Democrat you must not be religious, or have principals, etc. The major difference is where the Republican party for the most part consist of the fundamentalist, conservative christians, the Democratic party takes in members of all religions and members of no religion - in other words it is for ALL the people and not the Republican party's select few. As such it is of course more difficult to develop a platform that suits all people but that doesn't make it less committed to seeing their needs addressed. And what is this garbage that the Democrats have lost in the long run over the past 20 years. The best years this country has seen in the past 20 years were those when Bill Clinton was in office. Don't think so - come back in another 20 years when we're still paying off the debts from this administration and we'll discuss it further.

I hope the Democratic party doesn't dissolve. They do however need to get back to their base roots. As you state the special interest groups have taken the party hostage and its trying to win a battle on too many fronts. It's not even sure what it's base looks like anymore. I've seen Christian Democrats ask, what about us? I feel if the Democrat party begins to refocus on their roots and then the special interest groups will just fall in. Let them work for the party VS the other way around. Obviously its not working letting the special interest groups control them.

you won because you preached morality... but everyone that is paying attention realizes that you're a bunch of hypocrites... you've not really done anything to address any problems... only caused wars to stabilize the economy... it's not even to the point of highs in the 90s, if you adjust for inflation... and there was no war in the 90s to fuel the economy...

Democrats have principles and a platform... focusing on issues of poverty and health care... but frankly I don't see you talking about one actual issue in your whole ramble, besides tax cuts? What is the Republican platform? I've yet to really see it?

all you're spewing is propaganda... Bush BARELY (less than 3 percent both times) won twice against (loosing the popular vote once) against sub-par candidates? you call that a weak party?

there is no fiscal republican policy? where is it... what is it called? cite it please, because I have yet to see it?

thanks for the propaganda buddy

I totally agree with what your saying. And if the democratic degradation continues at its present rate, I believe there will be an end to this half-baked party. though, it must be taken into consideration, that even when the democratic party itself is no more, there will still be liberals, and they will still have power. especially considering almost all the media is liberally influenced (excluding FOX) and that every other celebrity is preaching some liberal idealism. the liberal way of thinking will continue, but its role on American politics will decrease greatly.

Will the Republican party end up in jail?
The economy is booming? For who? The wealthy?
For you? My checkbook looks like a joke.
Want to hear our platform?

HEALTH CARE REFORM, STEM CELL RESEARCH, GLOBAL
WARMIING, POVERTY REFORM, BALANCING THE RUINED
BUDGET, THE NEVER ENDING RISE IN GAS PRICES,
THE CRISIS IN OUR EMERGENCY ROOMS, CORRUPTION
IN GOVERNMENT, FINDING AN ALTERNATE FUEL SOURCE -
You know - the stuff that takes brains & science, rather than
one persons religious views.

WHOSE economy is booming? Mine isn't, and my state's isn't. You must be one of those rich people who have benefitted from Bush's policies.

As long as there are lower and middle class people, there will be a democratic party.

It ain't lookin' too good for your guys this fall, either.

When the Democrates lost control of the party to the LIBERALS , they lost it all.
Liberals will destroy this country if they have a chance, we'll end up like France.
