I've always had really good luck with Kenmore appliances from Sears.

Maytag Neptune, every time. I've had a set for two years, and just bought a new set for a new home...only because I have to leave mine in the old house for the next owners.
They cut down on wash and dry time a LOT as long as you keep the dryer vent clean.

The best one I have found is Polish. I have had her for 40 years and she only requires servicing a couple of times a week.

It really depends on the lifestyle you live and constraints (budget, time, etc.) that you might have.
Consumer reports has a great How-To-Choose section, describing what to look for in washers and dryers.
Dryers:

Washers:

Good Luck.

Kennmore by Sears are good brands.
Amana is rated highly as is Whirlpool front loaders for their efficiency.
Remember, you get what you pay for so buy the best you can afford.
