I have never been able to read the book (for weird personal reasons), but I have seen both the movie and the mini-series. The ending of each is so drastically different that it makes me wonder: How does the novel end?

I hadn't considered getting the audio-book, but that's a great idea... thanks!

It's really funny that people are mentioning the Dark Tower series--those and The Shining are the only books by King that I haven't read (and for the same weird personal reasons).

I hate to spoil it, but if you aren't gonna read it. Jack forgets to dump the boiler, but it doesn't matter because he is trying to kill Danny and Wendy. Dick(the cook) shows up just in time to help them, but Jack gets a piece of him as well. The only one who dies is Jack. Much as I love SK, I have never really liked the movies.

The book is so much better than the movie. It usually is I guess, but in this case the book really is soooo much more interesting and deep. The characters are what make King's books so special and it is why his books fail to make a satisfying leap to movies because his characters lose so much in the transition. I highly recommend reading The Shining. It's one of Stephen King's best.

the movie ending was changed from the book because the studio liked it better that way. King was still a new writer in the 70's (when the original was made) and did not have much creative control. the mini-series was truer.

Read the book!! Its better than both!

You have to consider that King didn't have anything to do with the screen play for The Shining (first one). Most of his early works that were made into movies were just BASED on his books. Read the book, you're imagination is better than anything Hollwood can come up with.

The novel is great! Get the book on tape or CD if that's easier for you. I won't tell you the ending because I encourage reading and books. You will like it much better. There is no way a movie can ever do a book justice.

The book was awesome.
I read it once. Then read it again, years later.
It's way better than the movie (which was pretty good).

Forget the Shining though and read The Dark Tower series ;-)

Similar to the miniseries actually, and you know what, don't feel strabge because I read everything Stephen King has written, accept Salem's Lot, which for some reason is personally disturbing.

Yes. Loved the book. Loved the Stanley Kubrick film. Hated the awful made-for-TV version.
