Nicotine (named after Jean Nicot, a French ambassador who sent tobacco from Portugal to Paris in 1560) is incredibly addictive. Two or three drops of the pure alkaloid (less than 50 milligrams) would be rapidly fatal to an adult human. A typical cigarette contains between 15 and 20 mg of nicotine but only about 1 mg reaches the bloodstream.
Smoking has been linked to lung cancer, bronchitis, emphysema, and cardiovascular disease.

Ageing is a result of vasoconstriction which seems to be worse for women when compared to men especially in the face. Nicotine is obviously a highly addictive substance, however, I would surmise other chemicals in cigarettes have addictive properties as well we just haven't see the studies given the myriad of them. Addiction is as much physical as psychological, so don't forget to address the behavorial component.
