At Costco, I haven't there recently, but when I was there last time, they did not install new tires on the front wheel, no matter what kind of car. I believe it was their policy. Anyone know why?

huh, are you serious? I doubt that is the case. Why would they have a tire department if they won't put them on the front. The front tires wear out way faster than the rear tires.

(This is a response to the first answer)

You get traction from all 4 tires. You get the most traction (in most cars) from the front tires because of the weight of the engine.

It was probably policy at Costco for some reason to not install the front tires. Every other place I've been to will install all 4.

It's there policy because your front tires will wear out faster and they don't want to cover you under any tread wear warranty.

You do over 80% of your stopping with your front brakes/tires so they wear significantly faster then your rear wheels. Also if you have a front wheel drive vehicle your front wheels also are your traction wheels. Claims from tire installation places is that you should have better tires in the rear to prevent fishtailing, but I believe if you not stopping because you don't have good treads on your front tires, sure you don't have to worry at all about fishtailing because you won't be stopping.

New tires in the front, always!

One mechanic told me it was CA state law to put new tires on the rear, I rotate my own tires and believe I would have more control if the better treads were in front when swerving, but I think the thought pattern is the better treads in the rear would help stop faster in a stable way.

When you instill new tires on the front of a car, with rear end drive, and the tires in the rear are bald. You have no rear end traction, and you could spin out of control.

if you pay for all tires to be fixed all tires should be replaced at the same time so you will have even wear, if you only have a couple of tires changed at seperate times it can cause quicker tire wear and buying new tires quicker, bad for you good for costco.
