Remember that all below-the-line positions in film/tv are unionized, and very competitive. The job you want isn't guaranteed. Most grips, techs, editors, etc. went to film school, rose from p.a. work, or had a connection. A film degree from a four-year university allows you greater opportunities if you ever work outside film. But, if you're certain you won't want a bachelor's degree to fall on, then I recommend film school, which still isn't cheap, but is more intense, and much shorter than a four-year university. The progams at AFI, Columbia, and LAFI each can be completed in about 18 months, after which you will have completed on-set work and developed many contacts.

Yea, if there's a school you can go to specifically for what you want to do then go that route. Some colleges offer a variety of classes and do have degrees in film or theater. I think you should do whatever will make you stand out. The more education or curricular activities you have will help you out in the long run when you're competing for your dream job. I don't think college education would matter too much though. It just helps.

Yes it can matter. For example, if you have NO experience in the film industry, then a degree in Psychology wouldn't prepare you for being in front or behind the camera because they're two totally different fields.
Education in that area, or a related one shows you're trainable and have some knowledge of the field. And if you can combine this with some practical work experience, that's even better.

I used to consider becoming an astronaut; it would have been nice to have some education to fall back on believe me!
