Why do comics from specialty stores have UPC Bar Codes on them now?

I haven't collected comics since the early nineties when there were "newstand comics" with those hideous bar upc codes and then there were "specialty store comics" with the cool logos in the scan box (SpideyHead in the above link).

So I visited a comic book store for the first time in 13years, and now, even the specialty stores have those hideous bar codes. What happened? Do all comics including specialty store comics have bar codes? Why isn't anyone outrages about this?
