First of all I think that its weird that we still haven't found the body of Jack's father.
As an answer to the general question I think that the island is possibly a hidden island, something of a ressurectd Atlantis which could explain the magnetism.
I think that the Others are people sent by the governments of the world to keep tabs on the Dharma initiative - remember the U.S. Army knife that Ana Lucia found? - but that their numbers were depleted by the 'illness' that Rousseau's crew were infected with. Here's what I think....

I think they ARE ALL members of an asylum. They have all been commited because to the different "tragedies" each suffered, and couldn't deal with. I think that through day to day associations and group theropy, they have each taken something from the others and compiled it into their story.

Now, their stories ALL INTERTWINE.

HECK, I DON'T HAVE A CLUE!!! But I watch it!!
