My guinea pig just turned 4 years old in May, and she's been having problems for the past month. She won't eat much and she just lays there during the day. But at night she's always squeaking and she runs around her cage. I've been feeding her before I go to bed at night because she won't eat during the day anymore. I've been feeding her some carrots and lettuce, and I've given her the pellet food too. I've had her for four years (I got her at 6 months old) and she's been fine up until now.
Can someone tell me why she will only eat and be active at night now? Do guinea pigs become nocturnal on their own, or is this just a phase or something?

No, what you are describing is not normal. Are you sure she is not eating? Some pigs won't eat if there are people around.

I would take her to a guinea pig-savvy vet and make sure nothing else is going on. There are many reasons why a pig may stop eating (such as teeth problems, parasites). Guinea pigs take small "naps" through out the day and night, so they can be active at any time.

You should be feeding your pig a more varied diet. Pigs are like people, in that they like a little variety. Try bell peppers, parsley, and different types of lettuces (DO NOT FEED ICEBURG LETTUCE!). See Guinea Lynx for more information.

Lettuce and carrots are the worst things you could be feeding a piggie. To many carrots can cause fatty liver disease, and kidney problems. If you're not feeding her properly her system will start breaking down at that age. They need good quality pellets ( not Hartz products), a full time supply of timothy hay, and a variety of fresh veggies every day high in vitamin C content.

In the summer mine don't do much during the day, but they are all over 6 years old. It might be just a little hot for her. I keep mine at 70 - 75 degrees year around.

Well your guinea pig is getting older, and it is probably just more comforable during the evenings to walk around. Like old people sometimes it gets too warm and they just can't do anything or it gets too cold and their joints hurt, evening might just be a comfortable time. Just enjoy the time you have with her, and let her do her own thing.

Try going to the vet. It might be a phase.
