The price of an ipod varies. You can get a 256 MB Ipod Shuffle at walmart for like 70.00, the ipod nanos go up to 3 gigs and cost over 200.00.
I believe the best place to get them is online through the apple store. If you're in education, you can get a discounted price. Also, they have refurbished ipods, and open box specials, Apple will give you a discounted price off those. Right now, there's even a sale going on where you can get an ipod nano free with the purchase of a computer.
Also, you may want to try ebay, sometimes you can find good deals.

You are aware that an Ipod is not the only device for playing MP3 files, aren't you? I use a Creative Muvo that I got for like $29 and it works great.

Depending on the size, they range from around $60.00 - $400.00. I've seen them at Walmart for pretty cheap. I haven't checked Amazon, buy they are usually a little cheaper than everyone else.
