I second the reference to Dell. They all come with 1 yr mail in service, which is a quick service if your laptop ever goes bad.

Check http://www.gotapex.com or http://www.couponmountain.com for dell coupons.

They had the rebates off their Inspiron laptops for a long time now.

I have purchase computers from all the companies you speak of but my favorite would have to be a Dell and I know that they have really good deals on laptops. My brother just got a really good one for around $700. You should just call them tell them exactly what you want and what you want to use it for and how much you want to spend and they will hook you up. Don't try to do it online it always ends up being way more then it would be if you called them. I have bought about 8 computers over the phone with them over the last 3 years. All of them are perfect the last computer I bought was an HP cause I thought I was getting a great deal and I have had nothing but problems with it and I spent almost $2000 on that one.
