It really depends on where and how you took the test. As a general rule, online tests are not very accurate.

But, let's assume that you took a test that's pretty well constructed (more to say about this later!). Here's how your I.Q. is computed.

I.Q. stands for Intelligence Quotient, and its obtain by dividing your chronological age into your "mental" age and multiplying by 100.

Let's say that you are exactly 18 years old. If your score on a standardized test indicated that your "mental" age was 18, then 18 divided by 18 equals 1 multiplied by 100 equals 100. This is the theoretical national average.

Most experts say that an I.Q of 90 to 115 is in the "normal" range.

But, my problem with I.Q. tests is this: how was your "mental" age determined? Answer: a standartized I.Q. test.

Now, let's think about the type of questions asked. Here's a common one:

A boat is to a regatta as an airplane is to
A. the sky
B. flying
C. a squadron
D. an airport

This is the built-in bias that many people claim accounts for the lower I.Q. scores of inner-city kids. [If you don't know what a regatta is, how can you complete the comparison?]

Anyway, I'd say that a score of 117 (even if the test isn't the greatest) means that you're in the normal range, and perhaps toward the high end of "normal."

I hope this helps.

Since an average IQ is between 85 and 90, yes, 117 is an exceptional score.

Funny that you asked this question because I took an IQ test on "tickle" and got 117!
(which is just average)

This score probably* places you at the 86th percentile of the general population, so comfortably in the top 1/6th.

*assuming a standard deviation of about 16, which is most common.

If it's from an online test and not a proctored, timed test administration, be somewhat wary. As a statistical measure, meaning depends on test conditions being equal for all participants.

100 is average, so 117 is nothing special. Enough for you to get by in life with though.

Average UK IQ is roughly 102 (i think) therefore you're brighter than the general populace, but I wouldn't rush off to MENSA yet ;-)

I think average is supposed to be somewhere between 80 and 100 and a genius is supposed to be above 150ish.

It's on the better side.

80 is seriously thick. 100 is average. 148 is the start of genius.
