law's front quarter panel to get the dent out and the hammer pops off and hits my wife's foot. It broke her foot, and she's blaming me. It's not my fault that the hammer broke, is it?

Sounds like your hammer wasn't in very good condition. In the future I would suggest taking better care of your hammer--they may seem rough and tough, but they can actually be quite fragile.
