I would start by giving them something that dissolves quickly. Gerber makes some that are just perfect. If you want to give them something that isn't baby food, try it in your own mouth first to see how fast it dissolves and go from there. When your baby starts to eat things that dissolve quickly really really fast (and wants to shove them in their mouth), then it's probably safe to start giving them cheerios or fruit loops. I suggest to buy the generic brand. I found out that they are actually softer than the name brand. Anyway, go with your motherly instincts.

It depends on the 6 month old. I think that's too young though. They're not even supposed to start rice cereal and strained foods until 4 to 6 months. Personally, I'd use off-brand Cheerios or the ones made for babies anyway because Cheerios brand takes longer to break down with saliva and they contain wheat starch (common allergen)
Some folks still start their babies really early on solids like was popular in the 70's. For those babies, they've possibly learned the oral motor coordination to eat Cheerios without choking. For your average baby on the schedule currently recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics... 6 months is too early :)

I waited until my son was a little older...about 8 1/2 months to introduce fruit and veggie puffs...he got his first tooth at 8 months old so we needed to wait for more to come in... The fruit and veggie puffs melt almost instantly in the baby's mouth...cheerios don't...I just started to give my son cheerios at 11 months. Good luck!!

My baby started at 5 1/2 months eatting Cherrios and Gerber Puffs (Sweet Potato were her favorite). She did not have any teeth yet and this soothed the teething pain. I always supervised her while she ate. It's really all about the child though and you know her best. My daughter started really picking them up at 6 months. Its very good for eye-hand cooridnation.

I would say if your child moves his gums up and down to gnaw on things then maybe OK.
My youngest ate them at that age she was also eating food from a spoon quite well. I let her have a couple on her highchair tray to try to pick them up and she never choked on them. If you think that they are too hard then get some of the star puffs from Gerber. They melt in your mouth almost immediately.

That might be a little young because they might swallow one whole and choke since they're just starting to get teeth at 6 months and they're in the front.

You should wait unil your baby is at least 8 months old for those types of solids. Then I would reccomend the Gerber Puffs. They come in all types of flavors. Always sit with your child while he/she is eating, as it is easy for them to get choked until they have all their teeth to chew.

yeah.
you'll know when he/she is ready b/c he/she will start pinching at things. if he/she can use the pincher grasp and pick them up and put them in his/her mouth then they are ready!
cheerios dissolve quickly and aren't as expensive as some baby pick-ups.
i remember eating cheerios when i was little. i used to have a baggie of them to take to church with me:)
ask your pediatrician to be sure, though.
