Why is that when I have something like a doctors appointment, plan on going out to apply for jobs, or have some sort of thing I have to do,
I am up all night the night before?
Even when I have things prepared I can always find things I think I have to do.
And heaven help me if I have something big like a move or big trip.
It's a good thing I don't vacation very often.
Do something nice for a stranger today. And tell them to pass it forward.
Good life to you.

I'm afraid I'm not just moving toward it.
It's well rooted. I'm 46 and been this way forever. I could handle it when I was younger. It's just wearing me out now.

I'm forty and I still do it too. I guess it's because I'm a very detail oriented person and a total night owl normally and a complete insomniac the night before special events. There is a cure. Ask your doctor about Lunesta. I don't take it all the time, just when I'm in overdrive mode and know I won't get a wink of sleep otherwise. It works great, you go to sleep within half an hour if you take it on an empty stomach (or if you eaten it shouldn't be a high fat meal according to the instructions from the pharmacist) and you wake up feeling refreshed, not groggy and I highly recommend it. Good luck!

It happens to me a lot and I'm 29. I'm always worried about what's going to happen, am I going to mess up?, and what if this happens or that happens. I couldn't sleep the night before my wedding and I couldn't sleep later that night because we were about to leave on our honeymoon. I kept thinking that I wanted us to do this and that and go here and there; I didn't sleep at all. Then I was tired the whole time because of the 1 or 2 nights that I didn't get any sleep. The only way I would have enjoyed it better is if I had slept half a day, but I could't do that because there were so much I wanted to do. Since there was so much I wanted to do, I couldn't sleep very well at night either...it sucked. I tried to make the best of it though. I've learned to take Tylenol PM to help me sleep when I have something to do the next day.

Sounds like you are moving toward an anxiety disorder. You can get control over your anxiety by using a few simple tools. When you've prepared for the trip or whatever, lay down at bed time and concentrate on relaxing each individual muscle starting with your toes and moving up through your legs to your torso and finally neck and jaw muscles.
I've never made it past my knees. I always fall asleep before I finish.
If this doesn't work, take an over the counter sleep aid and start again.

you are probably a type A personality. I always feel like I have something to do even when I don't. I have never taken a vacation and I work at McDonalds!! I am currently on Prozzac for depression and anxiety which also seems to help me slow down a little and say no things once in a while. But without medication write down things you feel you need to do and once you have written it down you are not allowed to add to it, once you completed your list then you can relax and sleep or do whatever it is you feel you need to do.

Sounds like anxiety, maybe try drinking some chamomile tea. See quoted paragraph below and source link.
"Drinking the tea also was associated with an increase in urinary levels of glycine,....Glycine also is known to act as a nerve relaxant, which may also explain why the tea seems to act as a mild sedative, the scientists note. Glycine supplements are sold in stores for that purpose, they add."

I'm 53 and do the same thing. I tell myself to sleep and rest so I will be ready for the 'whatever' but I just cant do it. I go over what might happen or be said. I fall asleep exhausted and wake up earlier than usual cause I cant sleep. I think I expect perfection in my life(remember being that way as a kid). I remember my dad telling me I could do better. Maybe its wanting perfection or maybe as we get older our nerves are just shot to he ll. I think a psychiatrist would have a hayday with me. m

I know you have anxiety and all the above answers are good. If you are not like this every day you might take a couple of benedril to help you sleep the nite before. (I learned this trick from a pharmacist. He said they're non addictive and they do work!)
Also make a list of things you need to do as you think of them and cross off the things you have completed. Instead of worrying about what you have forgotten, just check your list.

Probably because you're stressing too much on your plans. Try having a glass of wine the night before an appt. or something to help you get to sleep.
And thankyou! Good life to you as well! :)

Meditate John 14;27, Peace I leave with you, My peace I give
unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your
heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Do this for a moment
or two, several times a day just like you would take a pill with
water. Do it as often as you please, there are no unpleasant
side effects.

i do it too. it is just excitement, anxiety, whatever you want to call it. the only thing that i've found that works for me is sleeping on my couch instead of going to bed. for some reason i can trick myself into a nap rather than sleep, so "napping" on the couch is what i do the night before any big event or appointment.
good luck!
