It is easier for them to dismiss your arguments if they can just dismiss you out of hand. What is funny is that sometimes Christians are portrayed as toothless hicks watching NASCAR, and other times (like when Libs lose elections) they are portrayed as master manipulators that have fooled half the country with their amazing resources and trickery... so these Libs either think Christians are drooling morons or the American people are.

Because they have no idea what a Christian is.

Assuming that the description in Acts is the truth. A Christian is a person that does the things Christ did.

Though a liberal agenda Christ opened blind eyes,. Fed hungry people, Walked on water. Oh and I like this one he did not go to church because the church people sought to kill him.

My take on the hick issue is lack of understanding. If you know someone that has this problem. Encourage them to heal the sick, command the storms, or turn water into new wine. Then no one will think they are a hick.

This is really a puzzling question. How can Christians be hicks when some of the largest churches and cathederals are in the big cities. I live in a city with thousands of Christians who aren't hicks and it is a fairly liberal Democratic city, Akron, Ohio. So the premise of you question about people on the left thinking Christians are hicks just doesn't make any sense to me. The same goes for the very Catholic cities of Cleveland, Boston, Buffalo, Pittsburg, Chicago and others. What world do you live in or maybe you are making a generalization about the left while complaining they are making a generalization about you and Christians.

Perhaps you should read a little Thomas Paine, if you think that Christianity holds any moral high ground. In an objective treatment of ethics and moral values, Christianity is not considered highly moral. It is true that there is a lot of direction and guidance, but the moral value of that guidance is questioned by most thinking people.

I give you some links to his book "The Age of Reason" below. The language is a little quaint, as he was a Revolutionary War hero, but the logic is sound.

If the loudest voices claiming to speak for all Christians happen to be hicks--either by common definition ("backwoods retards") or by their sanctimonious hypocrisy and imperviousness to reason and understanding--then people who are prone to generalization will assume all Christians are hicks. I see these people and dislike them intensely but I don't believe all Christians are this way.

The people making such generalizations may be ideologues who try and distort facts and discredit people who disagree simply to advance their ideas. They might be using some of these highly visible and loud evangelicals as unfair examples of what all Christians are like. Ideologues disregard the truth when it's inconvenient and doesn't support their own ideas and opinions. The far left certainly has no monopoly on this behavior. Our current administration is a case in point.

Perhaps reasonable Christians need to reclaim their faith's image from the charlatans, bigots and bufoons who have given their religion a bad name to so many people.

Preconceived ideas! Those on the left? If you look more carefully that opinion is pretty universal. I am a veteran, NRA, Republican, and I am close enough that I usually can shake hands with Attila. So now that you have a preconceived idea of who I am let me also say that I have read and studied most of the major religions not from the propaganda put out by the moral majority , family values groups, and Tom Cruise but from the books themselves. I am extremely well read and well traveled thanks to tax dollars. I am also a practicing christian and I am often ashamed of the mouthpieces that the christians have speaking for them. If people such as yourself would think and consider what you are saying before you step on your tongue you would not give Christians a bad uneducated image!

It is not just the left so therefore you are generalizing. But you bring up a very important question nonetheless. Films have alot to do with how people perceive the rest of the world. Someone See's a film about mean-spirited rednecks and think that all are like that. Some see rich white people as snobs and therefore think all are like that. Lastly, a film might portray a religious person as fanatical and think that all are fanatical. The fault lies not in these films but in the laziness of the people watching them. Who generalize and characterize people by not going out into the world to meet great christian people or nice rich people or rednecks that are actually very smart and open minded about the world they live in. I know that was a long winded response but to answer WHY?....LAZINESS in getting to know your fellow man. Very interesting question.

P.S. The proof in your question being a generalization is evident by such responses from posters like MATT THE STRONG.
Congratulations for inciting more hate among Americans. Instead of just posing a worthy sociological question that deserves merit.

I don't think that. I'm as left as you can get and also a Christian. In fact there is a whole group of leftist Christians. Maybe the people you have had contact with only see the Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons represented.

The fact that many Christians have stood by Bush as he's made blunder after blunder doesn't help at all. And telling fellow Christians they are going to hell for voting for someone other than Bush doesn't help either. That and gay bashing and not respecting other people outside of the U.S.

In fact, I'm pretty sure most left people who disrespect Christians are mostly referring to American Ultra-Conservative Evangelicals.

If there from the south I may call them hicks.. Not that I would know on this website and only if they make me mad.. Not very often.

I disagree though, Christianity of old taught morals. Now church seems a place for the hypocrites to go to make themselves feel morally superior.. I really doubt they actually are.. And the ones I've known, weren't anything close..

Because most liberals have been indoctrinated by the sixty’s rejects that infest our colleges and universities. These are the same people that invented the welfare systems that robs people of their self respect, brakes up families and gave these people a subsistence living. They don’t care about the result of their broken promises, they only know feel better about their consciences for their simplistic attempt to fix all.

Progressive liberals would rather see the simple truths (God and Family) that religion offers trampled, than see horrifying results of their macro-changes have had on society. “God is dead, long live the State” is their thinking.
