Not only does the prison lobby have a lot of power, but prisoners make population in politician's districts that can't vote against him or her.

Unfortunately, the US has become a prison culture.

the problem is that most people have to go to jail and the whole court thing and be ordered to take treatment or they won't go. In their minds they don't have a problem. It's the rest of humanity that's got the problem. Say drug addicts for instance - the only way for them to be clean long enough to think half way straight is to throw them in jail! It takes a few weeks for the stuff to get out of their systems. Then and only then do they start to realize the need for treatment but still won't go unless held in a facility. Even after all that odds are not in their favor for recovery. It's a life long proccess. And many don't make it!

Are you writing from some 3rd world nation?

Jail costs over $100 a day for lock down and $500 for high security. (death row etc)

Then what kind of treatment can you get for $18 bucks.

Dandruff shampoo costs that much.

$18 your talking some band-aids and a tube of neosporin

It's not just about the cost of incarceration vs. treatment. If it was, I'd agree with you. There are many reasons to jail criminals, including deterrence, as well as the fact that it is hard to commit crimes against society while incarcerated.

Bullets cost about $1 each. And there is a 0% chance of committing another crime. Cheap and effective, and garunteed never to harm society again. Isn't that the smartest choice?

The majority of people who get "rehabilitated" don't actually get rehabilitated they re-offend. They learn how to play the system better. The cost of protecting innocent people from violent repeat offenders = priceless. They should serve all their time, no cable tv, no radio, no free education, prison should be a deterrent, prisoners shouldn't want to go back there. Get rid of parole for violent offenders. It shouldn't be an option....

On those $18, are you including the cost of having somebody guarding the criminal during treatment so that he/she doesn't commit another crime until cured?

Ok while the murders and rapists are being treated,YOU give them a place to stay and guarantee everyone else's safety.
Even with treatment most hard core criminals stay criminals.
