im a competative swimmer and i noe tha answer to this question... PRATICE.... cuz pratice makes perfect... i started out didn't even noe how to swim so people taught me and i couldn't even finish a lap but my instructor just kep forcing me so i swam a lap and then two and three, four, five.... and now i can swim 80 nonstop!!!!
i noe that didn't answer your question because you asked about speed.... well the more you swim, the longer you can swim. (the easier it is for you to breath while swimming and the longer it takes for your muscles to get tired) while doing this, your body will learn the angles of the strokes. for example, i started with doing freestyle with my arms in the air and i smacked it back into the water and didn't even pull hard, but over time, i learned that you have to pull harder in order to swim faster because you need to pull the water =] so i learned the techiques by siwmming more. not only stroke, i also learn from kicking. i started off with flutter kick (freestyle kick) on my knees but i learned that kicking with a movement from your hips might cause you to get tired easily, but will help you float better and therefore will also increase your speed. anyways, swimming is a techinical sport... it's all about techinque!!!

Dan H is a moron.
try 18+ years of swimming everyday, often twice a day, combined with a large dose of natural talent and unbelievable genetics.

it takes a lot to become a fast swimmer
-dedication
-hard work
-courage
-good attitude
-physical attributes(big hands, feet, large wingspan)
-natural, God-give talent
-feel for the water
don't worry if you are struggling in swimming, keep working hard and it will soon pay off.

Practice perfect technique. As your technique improves, your speed improves. If you practice poor with technique, it is very difficult to get faster. Good genetics help but are not the answer.
