Well the one safe way is to know your partners sexual history or get tested with your partner. The one that really sucks is don't do it at all. Or do it by yourself.

Abstinence, duh.
But if you can't do that...birth control pills with spermicidal condoms. I'd like to hear of a time when that failed.
