Yes they were united..
Shia sunni conflict has been overhyped...
There has been a conflict at times but there is no main "Ideological"Clash between shia's and sunnis..Muslims as i understand,did "Jihad"together against the Crusaders..
Their differences within were much much less then the inner conflicts of crusaders..

No, they weren't.That argument is about who has the right to be the head of the Islamic community, the Sunni Caliphate or the blood relatives of Mohammed (the Shi'ite position). As such the argument has been violent and bloody since about 800 A.D. The two communities have had some periods of truce and alliance, but in general the suspicion of each other has never dimininished, and the violence between them erupts over and over again. Talk about a long, stupid, and useless fight. But that's what religious fanaticism does to people.

No, these two branches have been fighting each other ever since Muhammad kicked the bucket. Having the Crusaders around changed absolutely nothing in that regard.

oh dear, no they weren't. when islam was first established, there were no sunnis of shiites. the divide happened when the prophet mohammed died. there were problems as to how and who were in charge and how they got there, which mainly happened after the prophet muhammed died. i can't remember exactly how it happened. i studied it in my history class last fall. but it didn't take long for the divide to occure.
