Apparently it is this:
1) to squander US money as fast as possible
2) steal and abscond with whatever is not tied down
3) be an obstacle to standing up to dictators
4) talk a lot and vote on meaningless resolutions
5) be a model of inefficiency for the world
6) be such a bureaucratic mess that it takes 10 times the money and staffing that a normal business to run
7) be unresponsive and unaccountable
8) be hypocritical and lecture law abiding countries like the US about human rights while saying nothing to China, N. Korea, Cuba, etc

The United Nations (UN) is an international organization that describes itself as a "global association of governments facilitating co-operation in international law, international security, economic development, and social equity." It was founded in 1945 at the signing of the United Nations Charter by 51 countries, replacing The League of Nations which was founded in 1919.
As of 2006 there exist 192 United Nations member states, including virtually all internationally recognised independent states. From its headquarters in New York City, the UN's member countries and specialized agencies give guidance and decide on substantive and administrative issues in regular meetings held throughout each year. The organization is divided into administrative bodies, including the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, UN Economic and Social Council, UN Trusteeship Council, UN Secretariat, and the International Court of Justice, as well as counterpart bodies dealing with the governance of all other UN system agencies, such as the WHO and UNICEF. The UN's most visible public figure , acting also as the representative of the body, is the Secretary-General, currently being Kofi Annan.
The UN was founded after the end of World War II by the victorious allied powers with the hope that it would act to prevent and intervene in conflicts between nations and make future deadly wars impossible or limited, by fostering an ideal compromised of collective security. The organization's structure still reflects in some ways the circumstances of its founding. For example, the five permanent members of the Security Council, with veto power, are the five main victors of World War II or their successors: People's Republic of China (which replaced the Republic of China), France, Russia (which replaced the Soviet Union), the United Kingdom, and the United States.

To answer your question, the U.N. Millenium goals are...
1) eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2) achieve universal primary education
3) promote gender equality and empower women
4) reduce child mortality
5) improve maternal health
6) combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and other diseases
7) ensure environmental sustainability
8) develop a global partnership for development
and of course to "Unite the Nations"
(now to rant)
Of course with nations not paying their dues, not providing troops, and not caring if all the nations of the world think what they are doing is wrong then most of their efforts limp badly (sound familiar US?)

Generally, it is to solve world problems. But many of the countries in the U.N. are enemies of the U.S.A. That is why we need strong advocates for us like, John Bolton (and in the past, Daniel Patrick Moynahan and Jean Kirkpatrick)
