It's hard to do two things at once. Have you ever tried rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time? It's kind of like that. You can rub your stomach, and you can pat your head, but when you try to do it at the same time you end up patting in circles and rubbing in this weird manner where you hand doesn't stay fully on your stomach. The trick is to start one going, and forget about it while you concentrate on the other. It's the same thing for singing and playing. You're just learning how to play the guitar, so it's something new and difficult. Naturally it's really hard to do two things at once when you are starting something new. The trick is practice. Practice the guitar part over and over again. It'll be tedious, and annoying, and chances are you'll get sick of it and want to quit, but don't. Once you get good enough at the song where you don't have to think about it, then start singing while playing. Most songs start with just instrumental and then the singing, it's so the musicians can think about the first few chords, and then they let their hands do what they've been trained to do while they focus on the singing. Trust me, in time you'll be able to do it.

Am a drummer n a Dj. In the beginin i found it really hard for me to play drums n sing at the same time (My voice doesn't sound that gr8 but i do sing parts for our band's songs). All u have to do is to practice. Practice makes perfect. One more tip that i can give u is don't b so concious while u do it. I mean let ur hands free n don't concentrate too much abt strummin the right way. The same aplies for Singin also. Cos when i was practisin to get it right i use to think whether my beat is in groove...? whether i'm singin at the right tempo? n stuff like that. Once u overload ur brain with too much stuff it would get stuck :) N don't ever loose heart cos Someday u'll b there. Can u hear me?

While I do not have a tip or advice for you, I did want to mention that singing and playing at the same time is a skill that not everyone can master. I call your attention to BB King. Everyone knows of BB King, blues legend right? Watch him perform sometime and you will notice that he never plays the guitar while singing. He will sing a bit then play a few guitar licks then stop playing to sing some more.

Good luck, but if you can't master it remember you are in good company!

It's a hard thing to do, but if you keep on at it you'll eventually be able to do it. It's why a lot of people find playing the drums or piano hard, because you have to do more than 2 things at the same time. If you break it down into small bits and keep practicing that bit until you can do it then you should be able to soon.

Learn the song really really well first. When you can play the song without looking at the frets or even thinking about finger placement, then starting wailing on the mad vox.

I think that is better when you practice the song a lot of times, at the same time try to do the lyrics in your mind... you need to be patient

Practice. It's hard at first, but once you can separate it in your mind, it becomes effortless. Now playing bass and singing is much harder.
