I am rolling on the floor laughing about some of the comments here! The school provides materials?! Where I teach, if the kids don't bring it, the teacher does or they don't have it.

The kids need a "nap mat"?! You have got to be kidding. Our kindergarteners don't even get a morning or afternoon recess. Just the 10 minute one at lunch. Gee- I wonder if that's why they fall asleep during class or act like they are crazy.

Our local Wal-Mart and KMart post lists of supplies requested by the schools. If you don't have that, try calling the school to get a list. If there are back to school sales going on and you can get a good deal on the supplies and you can afford to, I'd go ahead and buy the traditional crayons, scissors, glue/glue sticks, book bag. Then what you don't need you can keep at home or return to the store.

it depends on the school.
when i went to kindergarten, i needed ALL of the basic school supplies (paper, folders, binder, crayons, pencils, colored pencils, the works...), but my little brother went to a school a couple of blocks away and there they had everything for the kids except for backpacks and folders.
so i would check with the school if i were you, but usually if they don't send you a specific list before the school year starts they'll either a) have everything for your child there (besides the backpack) or b) give you a list sometime during the first week of school. so don't worry, and enjoy the kid-free days! lol

The teacher usually sends home a note to let the parent know exactly what supplies your child will need. Kindergartners don't use notebooks. So don't buy anything. Wait until your child starts school so that you don't spend your money unnecessarily. One thing I do recommend is that you put a extra pair of clothes and underwear in his/her backpack for emergencies.

The school should have a general list of what the Kindergartners should have, but the teacher may have different ideas. I know at our school we had a meeting with the teacher a couple of weeks before school started. At that meeting she provided us with a list of what she wants the kids to have. Her list was smaller than the list the school had put out. If you don't have meetings with teachers before school starts, you should be able to call the school and ask what your child's specific teacher requires. In my daughter's classroom they all shared everything, it was easier that way, it was kind of like we were donating to the class and throughout the year the parents would donate things like glue sticks, markers, snacks and juice boxes that they would run out of.

P.S.- Does your school have a web-site? If they do, a school supply list should be on there.

Your school has a class list... get it. Most teachers are very picky about what to bring, even down to brand choice in some cases. Once the school opens for the fall, call and ask for the classroom list.

visit the school to get a list or call and see if there is a list available or visit the school's website
some local stores like wal mart and target and office depot will have the lists also
do not get things until you see a list
do not buy and send things not on the list

Usually the classroom has everything they need. Just send a snack and a change of clothes.

It's best to buy supplies after you hear from the teacher what they'll be needing.
