It is indeed Mad World. It was originally done years ago (80's probably) by Tears for Fears, but was recently redone by Gary Jules, so you might have that version in mind. His version is slower and kinda haunting, but very beautiful, and it has shown up in a few TV shows and such.

The song was Mad World- the original was Tears For Fears but the version you've probably heard is by someon called Gary Numan, released a couple of years ago and I believe it got to number one as well. It's pretty depressing as a song I think!

Mad World by Gary Jules

***Note****
this song is by tears for fears, gary jules did a cover of the song

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places
Worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going no where
Going no where
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression
No expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow
No tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen
Sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me
No one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me
Look right through me
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Enlarging your world
Mad world

I've got no idea but it's a mad world.

I can't get away from hit men, I came on the pc because my husband and kids are watching Mr & Mrs Smith.

Tears for Fears did the original one, but if your looking for the slower more recent one, its by Gary Jules.
