There are alot of things that can cause mild to severe breakouts & acne: birth control, heredity, hormonal changes, stress, diet, etc, but in following the below steps, you should begin to see an improvement in your skin. If you don't see an improvement in your skin and the breakouts/acne continue or become worse, see your dermatoligist.

First of all, it's important that you take care of your skin on a daily/weekly basis as follows...

~DAILY/WEEKLY SKINCARE~
-You will need: Cleanser, Toner (or Astringent), Cotton Balls, Moisturizer, Mask (or Masque), Extractor (found at most beauty supply stores), and either a facial steamer or hand towel for steaming.

-Morning and night (before going to bed): cleanse, tone, and moisturize. If you have clogged pores, whiteheads and blackheads, then 2-3 times a week include steaming( in this order: cleanse, tone, steam, tone, moisturize).

-Once a week: cleanse, tone, steam, exfoliate, tone, *extractions, tone, mask, tone, moisturize.
*Don't begin doing extractions until you have been following all of the other steps for at least 2 weeks, so that the steaming will have caused any tough blemishes to begin to soften.

-How to: *
Cleanse -use a small amount and lather with water, apply using circular motions all over face and neck, repeat if you have makeup on
Tone - Squeeze a small amount onto the cottonball and wipe all over face and neck
Steam - for 10-15 minutes, using one of these methods: facial steamer, hold your face 3-5 inches above steaming water, or drape a hot towel over your face (leaving your nostrils and/or mouth exposed)
Exfoliate - follow the same steps as in cleansing, but don't repeat
Extractions - place the hoop (or eye) over the blemish (or blackhead) so that the blemish is in the center of the hoop, apply slight pressure and use rocking and rolling movements all around the blemish (don't use so much pressure that you create indentions or bruises on your skin), if and when the blockage comes out of the pore, wipe away with a cottonball that has been dampened with toner
Mask - apply mask evenly on face and neck, leave for 10-15 minutes, remove by draping a hot towel over your face, then wiping away - if it begins to sting or burn intensly before 10-15 minutes has passed remove and consider using a milder mask
Moisturize - apply a small amount on face an neck and massage until it's absorbed
*In all of these steps, always avoid the eye area.

~PRODUCTS~
It's best that you stick with ONE product line formulated for your skin type.

For mild acne, use Neutrogena, here are some links to products for acne/oily skin types: http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails_259.asp,
http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails.asp?ID=69, http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails.asp?ID=195, http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails.asp?ID=153.

If your skin is also sensitive or more of a combonation (oily & dry), you may want to consider using thier products for combination skin: http://www.neutrogena.com/SosSolution_3.asp, http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails.asp?ID=69, http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails.asp?ID=156, http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails.asp?ID=153.

For severe acne, try a product such as ProActive (it worked for me) and definitely see your dermatologist.

~VITAMINS/MINERALS, DIET, & EXCERCISE~
Each day, include a multivitamin for women and try to maintain a fairly healty diet and exercise routine. Also see this site about vitamins and the skin: http://healing.about.com/library/uc_acne_0209c.htm. Don't take any of these vitamins or minerals listed if they are already an ingredient in your daily multivitamin.

There are plenty of home remedies for acne. My favorite, is a mixture of egg white and honey or lemon applied directly to the broken-out areas and left on overnight (you can use egg whites alone too). It's simple, safe, cost effective, and you probably have the ingredients on hand. This is very effective for me, and it makes the pimples considerably smaller the next day.

Misting your face daily with about 8oz of water with a few tablespoons of vinegar mixed in is good too, because it balances the PH levels of your skin. If you're looking to pamper yourself and clear your skin at the same time, try a mixture of oatmeal, cornstarch, and just enough water to form a paste. Or a mashed banana with a tablespoon of honey mixed in.

Finally, don't scrub, this only makes the problem worse. Gently wash your face twice a day with a mild soap, and pat dry. Don't sleep with makeup on, and try not to touch your face too much, because the bacteria on your hands can make the acne worse.

ETA: Acne is NOT caused by diet. That is a myth. Extensive scientific studies have not found a connection between diet and acne.

1. rinse your face after each cotton ball./
First, wipe your face with water and a cottton ball.
2.Get antoher cotton ball, this time for hydrogen peroxide.
3.Next cotton ball: witch hazel.
4. NEXT cotton ball: Aloe vera.
5.NEXT cotton ball: some gentle soap
6. Wash face thouroghly with water,
7. Wash with gentle soap
8. Rinse again.

Do daily, Make sure you have no alergies to the ingredients listed.
MOST OF THESE ITEMS ARE FAIRLY common. the aloe is completely optional and just offers releif from teh stinging of witch hazel and h. peroxide if the acne is really bad.
If ya feel like leaving the house someime though, NOXEMA and Phisoderm work as reallyy nice gentle soaps, which do not require the use of the other cotton ball stuff.

One trick I've used is salt. Wet the infected area and rub a few pinches of salt over the skin...it'll feel a little like sand. If at all possible, leave the salt on the area for as long as you can. This will help start the drying process and cause the pimple to disappear.

i heard that toothpaste is good for the pimples. i think the menthol in the paste brings the swelling down. and vicks vapor rub works too. and i think baking soda can have the same effect, mix it with a bit of water, (not a lot of water) and rub it on the affected area. and like the other girl said, drink a lot of water and avoid fried foods. you could have it once in a while, like some french fries, but not in excess. chips and chocolate can be bad too. but it all depends on the amount you eat. having too much chesse can also result in getting pimples.

make sure you clean your face properly each morning and evening (wash face after removing makeup as it's amazing how much can be left on)
I use a hot cloth (as hot as I can bear) and then splash with cold water. Just plan water- nothing else. Its takes some time but works

Keep this up and wearing makeup is still ok.
Or else, the pill can also aid.

I am a cosmetologist and donnarenee04 has the best answer. If you have oily skin Clearasil is a great brand to use. If not, Proactive solution, Clean and Clear, and Mary Kay are your best bets.
