Inflammation of a joint, usually accompanied by pain, swelling, and stiffness, and resulting from infection, trauma, degenerative changes, metabolic disturbances, or other causes. It occurs in various forms, such as bacterial arthritis, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis.

This is a dictionary definition.

There are so many types of arthritis but they are connective tissue ailments meaning that they affect collagen, cartilage, ligaments and tendons. Some forms of arthritis are brought on by overproduction of anti-bodies by the immune system. The anti-bodies will cause damage to the connective tissues because they think it is diseased. There is still a great deal of unknowns about arthritis.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was diagnosed 15 years ago. My understanding is that the doctor's really don't have a clear answer. Rheumatoid has not been cured. It can only be arrested or slowed down. The AMA - American Medical Association has a great web site and can answer many of your questions.

Arthritis is a combined word derived from "Arthro" = joint and suffix "itis" meaning inflammation. So Arthritis means inflmmation of a joint(s). The cause of arthritis is idiopathic (meaning unknown).

arthritis is deterioration of cartilage between bones (example knuckles) the cartilage slowly deteriorates and bones begin rubbing together.
