1000 is Japan and 1001 is for the US.
They are the same, identical components, identical build quality, identical screens.
The only difference is the region of movies they can play and that the X and O functions are swapped.
1000: Japan, Region 2
1001: North America, Region 1
1002: Australia/New Zealand, Region 4
1003: UK, Region 2
1004: EU. Region 2
1005: Korea, Region 5
1006: Hong Kong/Singapore, Region 3
1007: Taiwan, Region 3
1008: Russia, Region 5
1009: China, Region 6
One is not better or newer than the other, its just how sony keeps the differnt models for each region seperate.
