There are nine oranges of equal size and shape and all except one (50gs heavier) are of the same weight. How can you identity which one? You can use a balance (weighing machine) only twice. You can keep the oranges on both the sides.

Step 1: split three and three on the scale, if it is equal then you have the heavier one identified to be one of the remaining three since the scale equals. (Proceed to step 3)

Step 2: If not then the side it tips to contains the heavier one. Take the three that the scale tipped to and proceed to step three

Step 3:So take the remaining three, pick two of them and place them on the scale. If they equal then the heavier one is the one of the three that is not on the scale. If they do not equal then obviously you have identified the heavier one on the tipped side of the scale

split the oranges into 3 groups of 3
weight 2 of these groups, this lets you identify the group of 3 the orange is in (the heavier group, or if they are equal its the third one)
then out of the group use 2 oranges and weight them and choose the heavier one if they are equal then its the third one

aw man i got beat

If you're in the Earth's atmosphere, the heavier one will fall faster if you drop it.

Dr. Misako below has the right answer although it is worded somewhat poorly.

I don't think it can be done unless you get to use the scale at least eight times.
