You must exercise care when cleaning copper because often items are only plated with a very thin layer. If the surface has been lacquered, use a cloth or sponge with a mild detergent.
If you're trying to clean copper cookware, try Bar Keepers Friend. Use it with a damp cloth (not a scouring pad!) and you will likely be impressed with the results. Keep in mind that using any type of abraisive could damage the patina of your copper.

If the copper has not been lacquered, make a paste of vinegar and salt and rub on the copper article, then rinse with warm water.

try using ketchup. just squirt a little ketchup on the copper, rub it around and you can almost watch the copper turn bright again.

Don't laugh but you have to pour pee on it (fresh urine) and let it soak then spray windex on it and it will break apart with a gentle rub with a towel.
