Can someone tell me why all the taxis (at least in Washington, DC) say "Call 911" somewhere on them, usually right next to the sign that says "taxi"? You can't call 911 to have them dispatch a cab, can you?

In response to a previous answerer- with all respect, is an image search any sort of comparison to walking down the city streets every day, several times a day?

It is not one cab company. It is all cab companies. It is usually on the light on top of the cab, next to the word "Taxi"

Also, the cabs in my experience look nothing like police cars.

Some cabs have a switch next to the driver seat that allows them to turn on a flashing light that says "Call 911". This is supposed to alert people around the cab that there may be a problem inside the cab so that they will call 9-1-1 so that the police can come help the cab driver.

I haven't seen every taxi there is of course, but in doing a image search of taxi cabs in Washington DC, I do not see "Call 911" anywhere on them. If there is a local company doing that, call them and ask why.

yup. it's that bad around here. that's why if you notice, many cabs look like cop cars with those side mounted lights? to deter people from trying to mug them in the dark.

Here in Ontario, they say if you see this light on call 911...I think it means if they are being hijacked or robbed or something!
