I have 256 mb of RAM on my computer. I just bought another 256 mb of RAM. My computer has 4 slots, but the slots are not in order. They go from left to right Slot 1, Slot 3, Slot 2, Slot 4. Do I add this new RAM to slot 3 since it is next to slot 1 where my other 256 mb of RAM is, or do I put it in slot 2, even though it skips one.. I heard if you buy a new RAM you arent supposed to pair them? Please help where do I put this new RAM????

Are they (the RAM slots) color coded? If so, follow the color code (same ram in same color). That gives you dual channel performance.

If not, use slot 2.

Look at the specs for the motherboard. Different boards require RAM to be installed different ways. If the slots are paired, which it doesn't sound like yours are, there would be 2 RAM modules already installed. For boards that support Dual DDR, you install identical modules in the color coded slots (1 and 3 are a pair, 2 and 4 are a pair). Also, make sure you are adding the correct type of RAM for your board. Some boards require EEC (Error Correcting) RAM while others don't. Pay attention to Clock Latency as well. If ever in doubt RTFM!!! (Read The F&^%ing Manual).

IT doesnt matter where you put them. You can use any slot. When your computer uses slot 1 RAM and then needs to use your other RAM source, it will just go to the next one. It really doesnt matter where you place it.

If it makes you feel better, just place it in the slot next to the one you already have. I always do it that way.

Slot 3 is the next one. Also, pairing RAM means not only to use the dual channel feature, but also to make sure you get the same size RAM stick (don't mix a 256k with a 512k, for example).

put it in slot 2, your RAM will be alright - they only recomend that you don't mix different type due to the fact that the faster one will run at the slower ones pace - you are spending money for something that you are not using. It won't hurt anything though.
P.S. make sure the power is off before you do this, also unplug the box.

Go to one of the sites below. They will help you with information about your motherboard and give you advice on which slot to put the memory in so it is correct.

you can put your RAM in any of the slots in which the RAM may fix, RAM works in any slots in which it gets fixed
there is no such compulsion that you need to fix it in this slot
