"Big Brother" is a fictional character in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the enigmatic dictator of Oceania, a totalitarian state taken to its utmost logical consequence. In the society that Orwell describes, everybody is under complete surveillance by the authorities, mainly by telescreens. The people are constantly reminded of this by the phrase "Big Brother is watching you", which is the core "truth" of the propaganda system in this state.

While it is a reality show, the term came from the book "1984" by George Orwell. It's a classic, and worth a read. It was the name of the head of their government who watched everything the people did. The government saw everything, hence the name of the show.

A term used to describe the government monitoring our every move. I believe it was first coined by George Orwell in his book 1984 (written in 1949). In it he describes the world as it may be in a futuristic 1984. Luckily, the real thing wasn't too much like it.
It's also a really great reality show on CBS.

It's a reality show that's kind of a cross between The Real World and Survivor.

Group of strangers spend the summer in a house cut off from the outside world. They have to nominate one another to be evicted (in the UK viewers evict one while in the US housemates vote).
