i was curious as to what it was. There were a bunch, and it looked as if they could have been alive??

A "string"? You mean all the shells were connected? By a string? I'm not sure what you mean. I live on the Coast and we do have a lot of shells. None that I can think of that would fit your description. If they were shells on the beach they could very well be alive.

The only two things that come to mind are a wind chimes or a plant hanger. Those are the most common items I can think of that have shells on a string.

We find these all along the Atlantic beaches too.
They are the egg cases where baby whelks develop.
In fact, if you open some, you are going to find tiny little whelk shells inside.

it is the waste product of a marine animal that has ingested them.
