I seriously think the creators of American Dad sat around a table saying, "Hmmmm, how can we introduce another character that is entertaining like Stewie, but is different enough so that no one can tell we based him on Stewie?"
"How about an alien, George?"

1st of all, you guys are all forgetting The Simpsons.. the pioneers to the crude and sophisticated humor. without them there would be no Family Guy/American Dad. Basically American Dad is Plagiarism of Family Guy(granted both Seth McFarland) and Family Guy is Plagiarism of The Simpsons(Matt Groening) enough said...

Its more than that, American dad is Geared toward republicans who love this country more than they love money, It makes fun of them yet puts them on a pedestal for all to see, Some think its funny some don't I find it interesting casuse some poeple literally act like that. But I'm a family Guy Man till the death- GO GO POWER RANGERS (sorry i'm bored at work)

For one, American Dad and Family Guy are created by the same guy. I think Family Guy is funnier, personally, but American Dad is good if you know your politics and social issues, also, it helps to have a sense of humor when it comes to politics and world issues when watching American Dad.

American Dad is just a cheap knock-off of Family Guy. It's not funny because they tried to top Family Guy but fell horribly short.

The alien is actually sort of a Brian/Stewie hybrid.
The pilot episode was a LOT worse... really crappy. The fish is really utterly pointless if you ask me... at least they don't have a meg character, though I guess Stan does treat his daughter similarly. Ugh... oh well.
