I would talk to someone in your payroll dept and explain the situation and then ask if they can set up a repayment plan for you. Maybe they can start deducting a percentage out of each paycheck until it's repaid. Usually if you work with people and offer to be helpful, they'll be cool with you -- especially since it was their error in the first place.

I would call your human resources contact, and consult your union steward if you have one, also try to remember who paid it out to you, and get in touch with that source. You shouldent get cut from your job, as you stated it was an error on the employers side. But I must be honest, and as a previous union steward for CWA, I must warn you, they ARE going to take theire money back if you still work for them at some point. You do have to pay it back. Here is a contact that I worked with as a steward, why dont you callthe J.A.N and see if they can help you further. Good Luck.

Is your employer aware of this? I would call them and act stupid. You owe that money and if it goes to court you could lose more than your job. That was not very bright on your part. People can't do things like that and get away with it.
No matter what you do, you will have to pay it back. But if you go to them before they come to you, maybe you won't lose your job. No matter where you go to work, they will be there to garnish your wages until it is repaid..............Fine mess you got yourself into. This is pushing it on my end, but I can't help it. Do you know what Dr. Phil would say? "What in the hell were you thinking?"
Sorry.

Get a lawyer. You need one.
Legally, you're not entitled to the funds, so they do have a claim for recovery. You should have notified them of the error, and held the funds in a separate account for their eventual return. You can both lose your job, and be sued for the funds paid in error.

Inform the appropriate person of the error in payment and together set up a way for you to repay the money before this issue is dragged in to court.

Probably lose your job and could be sued. If they made the error, notified you of it, and you agreed that you should give the money back, then you owe it to them. They may even deduct if from your next check if that is legal in your state.

They can sue you. Work out a payment plan with them to have it deducted from your paycheck.
And yes, they can fire you.
