Here's the thing what if your doing $8 an hour work but someone else is doing $2 an hour work, and minimum wage is $5 an hour. Does that seem fair?

minimum wage is intended to protect people from abuse.

Typically these people have poor skills so they'd be earning near zero if it were not for minimum wage. In this manner they are fortunate.

However, many such people cannot get work because their work does not merit the minimum wage. Thus, they cannot get work legally. In this manner they are unfortunate.

Hense, education is vital if you want to have a successful career.

Depends on your perception. Minimum wage by my standards now sucks, but for somebody else it might be fine (in high school I thought minimum wage was great!). Then I went to college/grad school and educated myself so I wouldn't be in the position to HAVE to take a minimum wage job. There is no way you can support yourself comfortably or a family on minimum wage, working only 40 hours a week. You'd probably have to work two full time jobs and even then, you'd still just be scraping by with minimal luxuries or independence. I have heard people say that it is more lucrative to live on welfare than to work minimum wage. But then again on welfare you are not building a job history that may one day allow you to have a job that pays more than minimum wage. You can't jump off the couch one day and decide that you deserve a great paying job with all of the benefits. Educate yourself, build a job history, be proactive with your career. OK I'll stop ranting. By the way, it is illegal for an employer to pay less than minimum wage, so whoever is paying $2 is in violation.

There has to be a balance.

If the minimum wage increases too much, Small businesses will get destroyed. The Mom/Pop stores will head towards extinction. And because much of the economy is run by small busineses, it will slow the economy down by less hirings, more firings, and less wages for managers, assistant managers, supervisors. It can be disastrous for biz owners that are making small profit margins ($1,000 - $5,000 / month profit).

Minimum wage should be applied the following way:

Small Businesses that have less than 10 employees
... Minimum wage = $5

Small Businesses that have have10+ employees
... Minimum age = $7.50

Corporations that employee over 100+ employees
... Minimum wage = $8.75

Minimum wage needs to go down. When minimum wage gets increased everything goes up in pricing. The people working that is making minimum wage won't get an increase because the extra that they make will go in the extra costings. And the people that already make more than min. wage would be losing because they don't get an increase however they still have to pay for everything going up in prices.

It's good for some of the people who are hired at the minimum wage, but it's not so good for those already working. It's even worse for those people who get priced out of the labor market by the minimum wage, and have much fewer chances for getting a job.

Businesses do not generally pay people according to how much work they are actually doing. They pay their workers as little as they can get away with and keep those workers. With no minimum wage, we'd all be making $2 an hour.

Yes, it's called a free market. they should eliminate the minimum wage and employers and employees will come to seperate understandings in each case, depending on supply and demand in the labor market.
In your scenario, without minimum wage the first person would likely get his $8.00 but the second would have to really prove his worth toget that $5.00.

Yes, it is good. If a person doens't want to work for minimum wage, they should not have agreed to take a job at that wage.

LOL.....I guess if it was legal to base wages on that you may have a point. I'd hate to have to be the one to administer that plan. Minimum wage was designed more for high school students and part timers. It was never designed to be the main wage earned.

Hmm lot's of arguments pro and con,
Everyone making minimum wage is not without skills or education, I see lots of college graduates working in Wal Mart, Do you think it's because they wanted to pay for a college education and make minimum wage.

Sorry employers tend to use any excuse such as "minimum wage forces cost increases" to not pay decent wages consider that most CEO's earn 2000 times what their blue collar counterparts make, Sounds like someone is making profits to me.

The bad part is consumers continue to purchase products from companies who send their labor overseas, If you make it overseas sell it overseas you chep piece of crap!
Typically people rise up when they are oppressed the rich keep us fighting amongst ourselves, have any rich people gotten poorer lately? no but the middle class is nearly extinct.

yep keep bitching about minimum wage and immigration while shopping at Wal-Mart buying chinese made products.
Also establish a group of like minded voters and use the leverage, the single voter is as useful as **** on a bull, blocks of voters is where the attention goes.
