I have 256 mb of RAM on my computer and I just purchased another 256 to give me 512 mb in total. But if I add this new one, not knowing if they are the exact same model as the other 256 mb one, will my computer run properly even though they are the same amount of memory, different types (DDR2 RAM) but they are not the same as the type that came with my computer. Please answer me????

If you mean brand by type, then it doesn't matter. Just as long as its' the same type of memory meaning ddr2.

Go to www.crucial.com you can locate your computer online, and it will tell you everything you need to know about your computers memory. Type, max allowed, and compatible ram.

RAM installation is always puzzling. There are 2 ways to verify:-

1) Visit the following link they will scan your computer & tell what type of RAM is compatible with your motherboard. (they will install a tiny software, which is very safe & check your memory within seconds)

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

2) If you have an intel motherboard just visit this link of intel & get your motherboard identified. Intel will install a software & give you exact detial of type of motherboard you are using & by clicking on the type of motherboad you can know which RAM is compatible with it.

I feel most of your doubts will get cleared by visiting curcial.com.
Otherwise, do not install the RAM if you aren't sure. Best way is to pluck out the existing RAM from your motherboard & take both RAM to a computer technician to verify if they are identical.

I read your reply that both of your RAMs are DDR2. I too came across similar problem fixing my RAM I got the following answer from a member 'dewcoons', which really helped (for more details you can also go through my Q&A there are many question about the RAM, they would be of much help):

"You are unlikely to harm your PC adding the memory. If it is the wrong chip, that could hurt the PC, you will not be able insert it. The little slot in the middle of the memory will be in the wrong place to line up with your memory slot. And if it is going to cause memory errors, you will get it within the first 30 seconds of booting you PC. At which point you power down and remove the chip. (You did save the receipt?)"

Actually if the RAM u bought iz not the same kind that is supported by ur motherboard you wont b able to plug dat. probably a MB will support only 1 kind of RAM type. (not both DDR n DDR2) so if u havn't bought wht u already hav, 'You will NOT be able to plug it in'

also remember that slots of DDR n DDR2 r different so dont try 2 attach a DDR2 RAM in to a DDR slot.

n about 1 of above answers, normally the computer will beep 1 long beep for a successful bootup. but in award BIOS(n som others too) 3 short beeps will appear if the RAM have somthing wrong.

sorry for writing such long, but if you only ment the brand names, but not the technology, the 2 RAM chips should work fine. but I cant assure you that, coz som RAM chips wont cooperate very much.

As long as the two modules are the same type they will work fine together, they do not need to be the same brand. Next time get two matching 512 mb modules and then you will be smokin'. That will wake the old computer up!

You will find out after you install the new RAM. If it beeps when you turn it on then it means the motherboard won't accept it. It should be ok though. The worst case is if your other memory is slower than the new one, both RAMs will run at the lower speed.

Try it and see, it should, it needs to be ddr2 if thats what you already had.

they'll work, but just remember to install it on the next slot over from the original, don't skip any.

It can't hurt to try it if it doesn't work then get the right ones.

if they are both ddr 2 and that is what your machine takes it does not matter if they are two different brands.
