What sort of pets - cats, a nice tame snake, not sure. When the house is done, it's for. We need to 'dream'.

Id go for something manmade to look like a tree.

Small palms in big pots. Certain kinds of cactus plants ( big leafy kinds) not good around small toddlers though. There are others too but i think you could get some ideas from your local garden shop. Cactus don't require a lot of watering. I think small palms would be the best though. They look great too! Just place them where there is enough window light.

Manzanita is a great wood for pets to climb and can be found in any pet store for about $ 3 a foot. It comes in all sizes and shapes and is very hard to destroy.
