The first piano was an upright and it was invented around 1780 by Johann Schmidt of Salzburg. The first song composed was Benum est confiteri Domino in1696.

The predesessor of the piano was of course the Harpsichord. Often known by its black white keys and white black keys. This is what Mozart played on. A lot of classical songs have been transferred from Harpsichord to piano. Mozart had quite a hand in creating the first 'grand' piano.
