Because it's free, because the record companies charge too much for a CD and because the law isn't definite on the subject...why if I can hear songs on the radio for free, can't I download those same songs?

Wow, you seemed to have drawn a lot of hostility towards yourself. I think it's funny how most of the answers assume you are quite wealthy just because of this question.

However, morons as they are, they've hit the nail on the head: Money.

People download because they don't have the money to buy a $15 CD or a $5 EP or even a $.99 download. They would rather use their money for candy, drugs, alcolhol, DVD's and other items they feel is more worth their money. A lot of people only download one song off a CD because they don't like the rest of the songs on the CD.

People also dare to brave it and download software. And what software do they download? Photoshop CS2, Cakewalk, Pinnacle, Ulead, Office and other programs that costs a couple hundred dollars. The average home more (i mean user) believes they need Photoshop CS2 to make an image of Aunt Mary B&W or they need Office 2007 to type a love letter to someone who won't even remember their name next week. They download the big names for the prestige. They want to say, "I use Adobe Premier 7." or, "I've been using Visual Studio for quite a while now." or even, "Yeh, I got Sound Forge so I can now not use it because I lack the mental capacity."

But in the end, it's all about the money.

Depends on your definition of "illegal" lol. Me personally, I've downloaded a LOT of music, most of which i do have the albums, just I didn't have a way to get them into Mp3 format before. Also, the songs I don't have the albums, I need to learn for the band I am in, and we learn a LOT of songs, I can't afford to buy 4 new albums every week, downloading is a quick way to learn a song.
