I recently got a quote on a bumper repair. I was wondering what the chances are that the estimate is actually an overestimate or an underestimate of the real value of the work. Do these things usually turn out to be pretty accurate?

If you are dealing with a good repair shop it should be really close to th estimated price. Usually they will write it a little high, just in case they find something else wrong when they tear the car apart. If you find that they raise the price significantly from the estimate you can make them prove that they couldn't have forseen it in the first place. That's a headache the good shops don't want.

In my experience it is an accurate quote as long as nothing comes up during the process of fixing what you came in for. That only happened to me once. The original problem was mis-diagnosed to begin with. However, I usually get a call if a repair is going to cost any more than the estimate.

I guess it depends on the technician working on it. Had one company who didn't charge more than original quote no matter what. And, I've had another shop charge me for the estimate then they guarantee the estimate for the actual repairs.

Call around and get several quotes. Auto repairs are usually marked up 300% I work in an auto shop

The insurance adjuster estimates the damage and gives you a check that you take to the body shop or you can put it in your bank account and fix the damage yourself. That is the way they do it here.

Usually they are right on the money. Try a few different ones and tell them you've been to a few already but don't let them know the quote. This way you get a better deal.

My experience has been pretty close. Of course estimate may be using higher price (or lower price) parts and that can vary from actual purchase.

usually they are the actual price. if the estimate shows that ordered part, paint, labor and all that stuff, then it probably be the price the you have to pay, if shouldnt be higher then what they are quoting you.

They are usually accurate unless they find something else wrong with the car after they break it down.

it should be exactly the same unless there is hidden damages which the estimator could not see at the time and he should have mentioned that as a possiblity when you received it
