Girls tend to be more serious about school. They comply with the rules, complete the work, and are generally more conscientious. Boys tend to be less interested in what they perceive as "playing the game" that is needed to really succeed in school. It's sad that, in many cases, being a good student and putting effort into studying is considered "uncool," and I think this is more true of boys than of girls.
Another factor is probably long term motivation and goals. Lots of girls have seen their own mothers struggling to support the family as a single mom, and the girls realize that life could be better if they had a better job. I told my own children that they would be wise not to have more children than they could support on their own, since the odds of having to do so are pretty high. Succeeding in school is a big part of getting a good-paying job. And the stereotypes of what jobs women are suited for have changed; even 20 years ago, it was pretty rare for women to work in jobs in science-related fields, and now it's not at all uncommon.

The most important reason is that they are much more conscientious. I think that they are not smarter than guys, but guys are much more relaxed. I have many extremely talented male friends, but they have lower marks than girls because they don't study as much, they don't attend classes regularly, and above all, they don't care for their marks as much as girls do.

Girls are more motivated to please adults via the system.
Girls are trained to receive their rewards this way from a young age. Academics basically consists of pleasing others - being motivated to do what it takes to get the grade. Girls are more interested in this than boys right now in our culture.
